Commissions

I accept commissions in sizes ranging from 16 x 20 inches up to 4 x 6 feet and subject matter from head and shoulders to multiple, full-length figures. Backgrounds can be simple or complex.

All portraits are rendered in oil on gallery profile, stretched portrait linen. Oil colour has been the gold standard for 500 years and is unparalleled in vibrancy, depth, translucency, and permanence. With proper care, a well-constructed painting can last for centuries.

Process

Creating a successful portrait is a collaborative process. Through consultation, approval of preliminary sketches and final drawings, you can be assured of an outcome that meets your expectations.

There can, of course, be variations in the workflow depending on size, complexity and number of subjects but in general each portrait follows a similar process.

After an initial meeting to establish the project parameters, possible locations and perhaps a few quick reference shots, I’ll sketch out two or three rough compositional drawings and present them for your approval. The general layout of the painting is agreed upon and final decisions are made regarding locale, props and wardrobe. Arrangements are also made for the photo shoot – an enjoyable session lasting about two hours.

With reference in hand I produce a detailed linear based on the agreed upon composition. This is a full-size drawing displaying all the elements. With your final consent I retire to the studio to paint, a portrait is born and you can start planning the unveiling party. If you wish, arrangements can also be made for additional reproductions as giclees.

Delivery time varies with size and complexity but you can expect your painting within 3-6 months. The total commitment of time on the subject’s part would be from three to six hours.

Price

There are so many variables – size, number of subjects, complexity and locale – that it’s difficult to compile a price list that accurately reflects all the possible scenarios. However, I’m only too happy to provide a tailored estimate if provided with the pertinent details.

Please feel free to contact me with your ideas.

Caveats, Considerations and Small Print

Because I strive to achieve a high degree of realism in my work I regret to say that, in most cases, I am unable to work from personal photographs unless they are of the highest quality and of good size. My work requires the most exacting reference possible and I employ a professional photographer for this purpose.

I am located in Toronto, Canada, and am happy to travel to clients in near proximity. Special arrangements can be made should more extensive travel be required and costs will be added to the agreed-upon commission price.

I prefer not to paint newborns or very young children and this is really more for the patron’s benefit than mine. The very young change almost daily and don’t become the face you know and remember until they grow into it a little. Young children (3+), however, are welcome and even encouraged.

Animal or pet painting is a distinctly different genre and one I choose not to pursue. However, a pet can certainly be part of an overall tableau.

Paintings evolve in the making and any artist worth their salt is only too happy to make minor alterations to the finished portrait that are consistent with the original conception and the artist’s established style. There is no additional charge for this type of alteration. For more extensive alterations a fee will be determined by the Artist based on the extent of the changes.

The client is responsible for framing as well as the costs of crating and shipping, if required. Should the client so request, however, I am happy to provide advice and suggestions.

Purchase of the original artwork does not include copyright or reproduction rights which remain with the artist as per the Canadian Copyright Act (2012). I reserve the right to show the piece in my portfolio and will retain images of the work for use in exhibits, competitions, etc., including the website. However, I will maintain the anonymity of the subject if requested. All photos and sketches remain the property of the Artist.
